Professional Bio
With 40+ years of professional philanthropy experience, including nearly three decades as a chief philanthropy officer and executive leader in healthcare, Bruce A. Bartoo, MPA, CFRE founded and launched the Gratitude Health Group in 2023. Intensely focused on unleashing the power of gratitude to create exceptional value in growing philanthropy programs, Bruce is an inspiring leader who partners with philanthropy leader colleagues to bring innovative gratitude-inspired philanthropy programs to non-profits across numerous sectors.
Having created and perfected an innovative “culture of gratitude” in his most recent executive role as Senior Vice President & Chief Philanthropy Officer with a ten-hospital health system, Bruce brings his unique background, experience, and perspective to leading transformational enhancements in philanthropy programming. During 13+ years serving in his last leadership role, Bruce envisioned and implemented an innovative and focused strategy that increased annual philanthropy revenue by over 600% while maintaining a consistent level of FTEs across the philanthropy team. During his tenure, the health system was recognized by the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy as a “High Performer” philanthropy program for thirteen consecutive years, the only health system in the world to receive such recognition consistently over that time period.
Earlier in his career, Bruce led transformational philanthropy enterprises in several health systems, including serving as system foundation president & chief philanthropy officer at a Catholic system in the Midwest, as well as serving in healthcare chief philanthropy officer roles in Northwest Ohio, Central Maryland, and Western Pennsylvania. Prior to leading healthcare philanthropy programs, he gained several years of experience as a higher education advancement professional in annual giving, alumni relations, and major gifts, and also served in political campaign financing, management, and executive leadership roles. Bruce has also served his community as an elected town council member.
With a Master of Public Administration degree from Drake University (IA) and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Westminster College (PA), Bruce has long been a “Certified Fund Raising Executive” (CFRE), was a member of AFP for many years, as remains a 30+ year member of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), with past service on the AHP Board and chair of numerous regional, specialty, and international conferences. Bruce has enjoyed frequent opportunities to present around the world on the topic of gratitude-inspired philanthropy, including speaking in the U.S., Canada, Germany, and Australia.
The Gratitude Health Group recently relocated from Bradenton, FL and is now headquartered in the RLA Conference Center complex in Cranberry Woods, Cranberry Twp., PA.
